Kaldoaivi Ski Tour in Old Growth Boreal Forest and Winter Wild Camping
Kaldoaivi Ski Tour in Old Growth Boreal Forest and Winter Wild Camping
A guided one week (from saturday to saturday) backcountry skiing tour following the northernmost pine-line in Europe at the Kaldoaivi Wilderness area. Well suited for skiers who have some previous experience in nordic or downhill skiing (but not necessarily on backcountry). Full board, most nights camping in freezing conditions. Organized from December to early May (note the seasonal impacts on daylight hours and temperature).
Want to challenge yourself with an off-the-track backcountry wilderness tour in the northernmost border of the boreal forest? Here is your chance!
- Level of solitude 4/5 (very high, because of the season and location; it is most likely that apart from the rest of the group you will not meet anyone during the tour)
- Difficulty 3-4/5 (Wild camping in winter; self-sufficient skiing off-the trails, snow conditions can be tricky, difficulty varies depending on the season)
- Suitable for: persons over 18 years old, who have some previous experience in skiing, and have good to excellent physical condition
- Average daily legs 10-15km
- Group size 2-5 persons
- Guiding languages: Finnish and English (there is also a possibility to German speaking guide)
- The tour lasts from saturday to saturday, and is available for private groups upon request
In this program you will experience backcountry skiing in the vast Kaldoaivi wilderness area following the northernmost line of old growth pines found in Europe. You will not have trail apart from those made by the guide, your companions, and yourself, and you are pulling all your gear in a sled (pulkka) yourself. You will sleep in a tent and quinzee, an igloo-type shelter made from snow. If you prefer the experience, you get to also try sleeping in a tarp shelter with open fire. All the food and gear (excluding clothing and winter boots) is included, but as it is a joint exploration you will need to do your share both pulling the sled and taking part on some easy daily tasks in the camp. These include melting drinking water from snow and setting up shelters, and the guide is all the time with you to help.
In the beginning and end there is a overnight in a cozy hotel service level cabin with restaurant meals and sauna included, and the tour ends with a visit to a reindeer farm with a delicious Lappish meal. On the tour you will learn traditional nordic winter wilderness skills, have a thorough experience of backcountry skiing, enjoy the solitude in a wilderness area of more than 3000 square kilometers, and will of course enjoy the company of the like minded adventurers.
The tour takes place in far north in a naturally beautiful and remote wilderness area dominated by several lakes, Europe's northernmost pinewood (the tour taking place on the actual pine-line), lashes of small birches and naturally beautiful fells and rivers. With some luck, the tour is crowned with seeing the magnificent northern lights.
